The other day I reluctantly stored my outdoor furniture for the Winter season. While I love the colors of Fall, I could easily convert the months of cold and icy weather to months with more moderate temperatures. Nonetheless, I guess we just have to wait and see what Mother Nature has in store.
One of the things I’ve noticed about the reference images I work with is that a good amount of them have a cloudy or gray sky. This is a typical New Jersey sky, and while good for photographing (less shadow), it’s not very uplifting. The first thing I paint in any portrait is the sky, […]
I love finding things to sketch while out and about. I found this plant at the New York Botanical Garden, and took advantage of the time available while waiting for the bus that would take us home.

Like a musician practices to perfect his skill, so an artist draws to perfect his art, to keep the hand […]
I’ve finally gotten serious about filling sketchbooks with drawings, whether travelling or at home. This sketch is Mackinac Island, a peaceful place where there are no cars or trucks allowed other than emergency vehicles. There are horse-drawn wagons and carriages; you may also get around town with a bicycle or explore trails on foot.
After all the years of doing house portraits for others I now realize I only have one of my own home, a layered wood portrait from years ago. I’ve gone back to my roots, pencil drawing, for this rendition of my home.
This is my favorite house portrait and one I selected for my logo, including it on business cards, flyers, and other promotional materials.
This has become my favorite pet portrait. It’s such an adorable expression; she seems to say “that was delicious … want more!” The thin brush strokes for hair were a challenge.
